MAY DAY * MAY DAY * We’re Sinking !!

**

NOTE:  The following commentary on the latest Misadventures of The N&O appeared yesterday – April 2, 2020 – on our companion page – SAIDWHAT!  Our “Editorial Board” – i.e. me and Blondie – assumed it was too “partisan” for this page.  But it really isn’t so we are simu-posting it here for “You People”.

It created an Internet Sensation among People Who Really Really Don’t Like The N&O … which seems to exceed the population of the DelMarVa Peninsula.

The News & Observer and its two sinking sisters – The Charlotte Observer and Durham Herald – are members of a dysfunctional family of financially destitute newspapers owned by the bankrupt McClatchy organization located in Sacramento CA.

Separating a soulless corporate blob from “real people” … I want to recognize the “good people” who I like / respect who, alas, bear the stigma of “Do / Did Work for The N&O”.

They are “That Damn” Dan Kane … Ruth Sheehan … Joe Giglio … Caulton Tudor …  Butch Robertson … Leah Friedman … and John Drescher.  There were probably  a few other “decent people at The N&O” over the years, but I never encountered them.

“Dead Tree Journalism/Media” is – in 2020 – on life support with ZERO chance for recovery… having failed to recognize the emergence of dramatic innovations in information technology over the past 15-20 years… as “buggy whip manufacturers” failed to accept “horseless carriages”.  “Newspapers” – as we have known them – are teetering on the edge of The Obsolescence Abyss.

The N&O / Charlotte Observer / Herald will morph into 100% digital entities – i.e. websites – within the next year or so.   Employing a skeleton staff and likely run by many of the same pompous arrogant jackasses with the same radically partisan attitudes.   But they will NOT be “fish wrappers” or “bird cage carpets” any longer. … READ MORE >

**

UPDATE:  On Friday, The N&O’s sister “sinking ship” – Charlotte Observer posted the EXACT “Begging For Bucks” plea to its dwindling subscriber base.   Only difference… the Editor signature at the bottom.  I guess using the SAME LETTER saved them a coupla bucks…

**

.

N&O Titanic

.

Local Destitute Newspaper BEGS for $$$

**

To no one’s real surprise… Raleigh’s Financially Destitute Newspaper – The News & Observer – is reduced to BEGGING its motley bunch of subscribers for more $$$ PLEASE.

.

Oliver TwistIn a pathetic scene straight out of Oliver TwistN&O’s current Executive Editor Robyn Tomlin printed a DESPERATE PLEA on April 1 begging for “more shekels” … “more porridge” … “a piece of bread” … “some magic beans” … whatever you can spare … We’re Desperate!

.

HELP!  We’re sinking.   We don’t know what else to do but hope “you people” are gullible enough to …. etc etc.

Look, if we “downsize” any more we – Sara &Robyn – will have to make the coffee and answer the phone and all that yucky stuff peons are supposed to do.

.

.NOTE:  Whats left of The N&O subscribers is of the notoriously “cheap” left-wing persuasion never prone to parting with its own $$$.  Robyn will be better off begging Would-Be-Queen Nancy Pelosi to include The N&O in her next Stimulus Scam.

.

Publisher Sara Glines and Robyn The Editor joined The N&O several years ago when parent company – McClatchy in Sacramento CA – realized that replacing expensive male executives with MUCH-less-expensive female executives would save them considerable salary $$$.

Let McClatchy’s Sr VP of Gender Diversity explains THAT New Millennium boardroom shenanigan.

.

Editor Robyn bases her impassioned BEG on the fact that for the past week or so her ever-so-caring-and benevolent newspaper generously lowered it’s digital “pay wall” – WOO HOO – to aid the community in coping with COVID-19 … reminding “said community” that…

  • COVID-19 is probably “all Trump’s Fault”.  We sure hope it is … and that
  • NC’s Wonderful Governor Ray/Roy Cooper will be taking away many of your fundamental rights… but Ray/Roy “might” give some of’em back some day… but probably not… LOL.

“Lowering The N&O pay wall” costs the NOT-benevolent, destitute N&O absolutely nothing.  It is like expecting your neighbors to “thank you” for leaving your Christmas lights up until New Years.

Robyn announced regrettable that “the pay wall” is being put back in place immediately “because Robyn says so”. Yawn.Eddie Intern

That announcement meant absolutely nothing to any one except Eddie The Intern Nerd who has to perform the single keystroke to “do it”.

.

This Begging by The N&O follows an announcement several weeks ago by parent McClatchy that it is BANKRUPT and can no longer fund its Pension Fund.  There are many more “former McClatchy employees” than there are “current McCatchy employees” by a factor of 32 to 1.

That further pissed off the angry mob of “former McClatchy employees” who were all told countless times over the past five years ….

.

“Don’t worry.  We’ll all be fine.  Those naive fools / “our subscribers” – can’t get along without our daily newspaper regardless how bad it is.”

.

What desperation moves The News & Observer makes are duplicated by its sister “McClatchy sinking ships” in Durham and in Charlotte.  For some months “they” have simply printed one glorified high school newspaper in very large type and stick the names News & Observer or Herald-Sun or Charlotte Observer on the top of whichever stack is going where.

Since carpetbagger McClatchy became North Carolina primary publisher of highly partisan newspapers, its stated Editorial policy has been:

.

To Insult, Demean and Humiliate Anyone & Everyone who do not embrace our Radical Left-wing socio-cultural political views.

McClatchy’s newspapers have done exactly that… very effectively and aggressively for 20+ years.

.

Their whizbang research nerds neglected to inform “the accounting guys” that the Anyones & Everyones they would be insulting represented AT LEAST 50% of their target markets.     That 50% of their local / regional markets aren’t even aware they are still in business … which they barely are… and don’t care if they shut down this week … next week … or whenever.

So… Why Would Anyone Bother With The News & Observer?  The ONLY REASONS anyone could come up with are ..

  • Obituaries … and
  • Grocery coupons … and, of course
  • THE BobKennel’s impassioned LTTE’s screeds

Those community services can be provided on-line by clever entrepreneurs.

Industry analysts have pondered this inevitability for several years.  Best guess = the whole sad mess will be sold-off for $.10 on the $1.00 and …   memorabilia such as a Barry Saunders “Cool Dude” Fedora…  and Rob “RielleWho” Christensen’s Dan Rather – autographed trench coat posted on EBay expected to attract as much as $10-12 if not more.

Re: The ultimate future of the not-so Good Ship N&O… The only question to be answered as it sinks beneath the stormy seas is What tune will the orchestra play as it goes … glub … glub … glub.

It won’t be “Nearer My God To Thee”.  That’s for sure.

My former employer, The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, (also a McClatchy entity) just posted an article from their Exec Editor titled: “Dear reader: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram needs your help”. It then begs for “tax-deductible donations to help offset revenue losses and fund newsroom operations to cover the coronavirus and our community’s recovery.” and “Your gift will…allow us to continue to hold leaders accountable for how they conduct your business and work to keep us safe.”

It’s certainly been a slow-death of both this paper and the industry…but this is getting ugly!

(PS: How is such a thing Tax Deductible?)

I never viewed the N&O as a liberal/leftist newspaper, I viewed it for what Josephus Daniels intended it to be, the opinion leader and mouthpiece of the North Carolina Democratic Party. However McClatchy never got the memo apparently. But maybe they just got confused and tried to be the mouthpiece of the CALIFORNIA Democratic Party.
Yeah, that makes more sense.

Well… that’s a lot to consider requiring several hours of IPAs on the backyard deck, but I’ll give it a shot. . I’m just past all this Republican vs Democrats nonsense. It’s Establishment Elites vs ‘we the people’. That is the REAL war and political parties have nothing whatsoever to do with it. But there are certainly factions within the Establishment and that’s where partisan politics plays a role. . Now it’s easy to say all Democrats are leftists/Marxists but that’s not really true. The big money people in the Democratic Party, guys like Bezos, Soros, Steyer, Bloomberg, Buffet etc.… Read more »

The N&O death spiral began for me when they turned their back on down east NC by stopping delivery 2-3 decades ago. . This was after killing off The Raleigh Times because TV made an afternoon newspaper irrelevant. . Even after these two strategic business moves, they ignored their loss of importance in a new media paradigm. . I don’t see Bully Barber offering any of his Genius grant money to help them out. And he earned that money off the ink the N&O used to make him bigger than life while selling papers to their loyalist. Kinda of a… Read more »

Newspapers have never been nonpartisan. Throughout NC history, every single one had a particular political objective. I think it is part of why they were wounded so much by TV news for the last two generations. The net gave them the technology to remain relevant, but they mostly held onto their 19th and 20th century habits of carrying the political water for someone. Opportunity missed. Now on to the dustbin of history. . Last full CO sports page I saw…at the oil change place, the 4 page sports section had no box scores. Everyone knows who won by now, can’t… Read more »

UNC fans blame the N&O for much of the TGU just as NCSU blames the N&O for railroading Jimmy V, 35 years ago. This is giving far more credit or blame than the N&O deserves, especially in the last 10-15 years. The N&O finds itself in a very familiar position. The wrong side of history. This is not a recent phenomenon in its history. Josephus Daniels was wrong. Claude Sitton was wronger, and the current crop of bozos is even more wronger. The only consistent stance in the entire history of the newspaper is its unwavering support of ANY position… Read more »

BL, I’ve been reading your site for at least ten years, so my opinion has some weight at least to me. . As far as Partisan Writing… YOU are as Fair / Balanced as any writer I’ve ever followed. You have strong opinions but you back them up. You accept that others can and will disagree with you. You let them. . You created a separate political page to spare anyone who wants to avoid “politics”. I share your politics so I enjoy both pages. . You are a UNC alum but you pounded them over TGU and you’re no… Read more »

Why is it so difficult to be non-partisan? There is obviously a huge viewer/ subscriber demand for this for any news organization whether it is TV, web or paper. . I lost respect for the CO & the N&O years ago given they consistently ignored successful college teams in the 80’s and 90’s while giving total coverage to UNC and on a lesser scale to NCSU. I remember ASU winning consecutive national football championships and barely a mention in the paper. ECU during the Logan era only received coverage when they beat State and Carolina but a win over Miami… Read more »

Well for the first time in my life I bothered to answer their plea…I sent the following
.
“Your continuous bashing of the President, no matter what he does makes me have no sympathy for your condition. Freedom of the press Is meaningless when the press is so overtly and unrelentingly partisan, which cannot be denied. Sorry, your product is no longer deserving of discussion as being of first amendment importance. “

BobLee, you had to know that Know-It-All Kennel would jump in all hoppin’ mad. … Why doesn’t he buy the N&O? Didn’t he invent Fire, the Wheel and Water. Surely he has the money to bail them out.

Yep, too partisan for this page, but your editorial board has say-so here. . But maybe this “page” is reduced without some legitimate sports to write about. :>)) . Maybe I should go over to the “Said What” column to see if you are trying to be the Limbaugh of bloggers. Might get you a medal around your neck if Trump has another State of the Union. (Sorry, couldn’t resist myself with your bringing this article over ) . Interesting writing of the article, however., In fairness to the begging by, the “female” , she did did point out that… Read more »

It could not be happening to a more deserving set of entities. What would be great is if some less whacko local folks would buy the paper and start making it a balanced reporting proposition with less emphasis on Don Quixotie-ing everything Republican/Trump and more emphasis on local happenings. I know that would be hard as they do not teach anything in J-school other than SJW based courses and Republican bashing…but one is allowed to dream.

It could not happen to a nicer bunch. I guess years of throwing poop at UNC sports does not sell papers outside of Wake County.

Our local fishwrap, the wonderfully named, albeit morally bankrupt, Times Picayune/New Orleans Advocate pulled the same stunt recently. The COVID 19 pandemic hasn’t forced me to change any of my habits regarding it. I was already washing my hands after any contact with it. I only read the sports section and the comics. We are still subscribing only because of my wife who, though younger than I, insists that the only “real” newspaper is an actual printed thingy.

Oh, but Sir Bob, you have surprisingly failed to recognize the real value of owning a newspaper. As the “only business protected by the First Amendment” (remember that?), they feel that the government owes them a bailout for mismanaging their pension fund. Maybe you should start the Bob Lee Daily Bugle and apply for First Amendment Protection Funds.

Just get a government grant. Make up the back story. That’s what most people are doing. Be sure to tell them you’re a journalist so they won’t check the accuracy of your reporting.

There’s probably a grant for that, too. Politicians have taken care of their friends in this legislation.
